Collected data are then compiled and analyze ready to be converted into information. Software applications are develop to do this task on the Internet.

Analysis for data mining is complicated. Gathered data can be operational, non-operation, or metadata. Operational data are those that are needed to run a business or establishment. This includes sales, inventory and company forms. Non-operational data are used for research and analysis. Examples of this type are forecast and training materials. Metadata is the study of the data itself.

Data mining software collects patterns and relationships. An analysis can be done on the data extracted from a food chain.
